SITREP: Day 1 of Tyler Robinson Hearing: Prosecutors Start Building Case Against Charlie Kirk’s Alleged Killer
A five-day preliminary hearing began today in Provo, Utah, for 23-year-old Tyler Robinson, charged with assassinating Charlie Kirk last September.
Prosecutors opened with evidence to show there’s enough for a full trial (and possibly the death penalty).
Kirk’s widow Erika Kirk attended for the first time with his parents and Donald Trump Jr., creating an emotional scene in court.
Family’s first courtroom appearance: Erika Kirk and Charlie Kirk’s parents saw Robinson in person for the first time. They got emotional and briefly left during graphic testimony about the shooting but returned.
First witness testimony: Former campus officer Chris Bagley described hearing the rifle shot while Kirk was speaking, the chaos that followed, and clues pointing to a sniper on a rooftop (including gravel imprints and a screwdriver left behind).
Evidence prosecutors highlighted: Plans to show DNA linking Robinson to the rifle, surveillance video of the shooter, a confession note he allegedly wrote (“I had the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk”), and a recorded interview with his ex-roommate.
Defense questioning pointed out limited security at the event — only a handful of officers and no metal detectors.
What’s next: The hearing continues this week with more witnesses, videos, and forensic details. Robinson has not entered a plea as of right now…

“Your bodycam footage that I reviewed appears to end while you were still on the roof. Do you know why that is?
Officer Chris Bagley:
“I think the battery went dead right at that moment..”
“I think” after the fact, is not good enough in this case. It either died or it didn’t. These are the kinds of things that make people, including myself, very suspicious.
