The US Justice Department has charged John Bolton, a former national security adviser to President Donald Trump who became one of his fiercest critics, according to a person familiar with the matter.

Bolton was indicted by a federal grand jury in Maryland for his handling of classified documents, said the person, who asked not to be identified discussing the charges, which haven’t been made public.

John Bolton indicted on 18 counts. Each of the 18 counts he faces carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.

The indictment states that Bolton kept more than 1,000 pages of diaries containing top-secret information and shared them with relatives. His email account was "hacked" by Iran, exposing some of the secrets.

Former Trump national security adviser John Bolton has pleaded not guilty to all 18 counts of an indictment charging him with unlawful retention and dissemination of national defense information.

Bolton entered his not guilty plea Friday morning in a hearing in federal court in Maryland before Chief Magistrate Judge Timothy Sullivan.
