NEW - A 2-year-old girl, Aryatara Shakya, has been chosen as Nepal’s new living virgin goddess (Kumari), she replaces Trishna Shakya, who has reached puberty and now becomes a mere mortal.

A two-year-old girl, Aryatara Shakya, was chosen as Nepal's new living goddess during the Indra Jatra festival. This selection occurs in a culture where Kumaris, or "virgin goddesses," are revered by both Hindus and Buddhists. Aryatara replaces the incumbent Kumari, transitioning her life at the temple palace in Kathmandu.

Kumaris are selected based on strict criteria, including unblemished physical traits. The selection process elevates the family's social status. However, Kumaris often face challenges adjusting to normal life after their reign.

Her father shared, “She was just my daughter yesterday, but today she is a goddess.”
