US labels Ecuadorian gangs as terror groups

In a major escalation, the U.S. has officially designated two Ecuadorian gangs, Los Lobos and Los Choneros, as foreign terrorist organizations. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the move during a visit to Ecuador, citing the gangs’ role in drug trafficking, extortion, and violent crime.

The designation gives the U.S. expanded powers to impose sanctions, seize assets and boost intelligence cooperation. Ecuador’s government has welcomed the move, saying it will help them combat the growing influence of transnational criminal networks. But critics warn that labeling gangs as terrorist groups could escalate militarized responses and risk human rights abuses.
