The Trump White House said Friday that The Associated Press is banned from the Oval Office and Air Force One indefinitely.
The AP, one of the world’s biggest news outlets, was singled out by the White House earlier this week over three words: “Gulf of Mexico.”
President Donald Trump said last month that the US government would rename the body of water the “Gulf of America.” The change has taken effect at government agencies. But other countries do not recognize the new name, and the AP has customers around the world, so it still refers to the Gulf of Mexico while also acknowledging Trump’s decree.
Other global news outlets have made similar decisions.
But this week the White House singled out the AP and barred its reporters from presidential events.

The Associated Press sued three Trump administration officials Friday over access to presidential events, citing freedom of speech in asking a federal judge to stop the 10-day blocking of its journalists.
The lawsuit was filed Friday afternoon in U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C.
The AP says its case is about an unconstitutional effort by the White House to control speech — in this case refusing to change its style from the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America,” as President Donald Trump did last month with an executive order.
“The press and all people in the United States have the right to choose their own words and not be retaliated against by the government,” the AP said in its lawsuit, which names White House Chief of Staff Susan Wiles, Deputy Chief of Staff Taylor Budowich and Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt.
“This targeted attack on the AP’s editorial independence and ability to gather and report the news strikes at the very core of the First Amendment,” the news agency said. “This court should remedy it immediately.”

A federal judge on Monday rejected the Associated Press’ request to regain access to events involving President Trump, including the Oval Office and Air Force One, after Trump banned the outlet for continuing to use “Gulf of Mexico” instead of his renamed “Gulf of America.”

The Trump administration will no longer give wire services a permanent spot in the White House press pool following The Associated Press’ victory last week in a lawsuit over its exclusion, The Post has learned.
Instead, the White House is giving a second spot to “print” journalists — a term henceforth including wire reporters — who will get access to President Trump in small event spaces.
There currently are 31 spots in the print rotation, meaning there would be 34 with the wires included.
The two spots for print reporters could nearly double the number of events into which most major print news outlets are admitted, while dramatically decreasing opportunities for the wire services.

The Associated Press is asking a federal judge to step in following a move by the White House to remove the spot typically reserved for wire services from the press pool covering President Trump.
The West Wing’s decision came just days after U.S. District Judge Trevor McFadden ordered the Trump administration to restore the AP’s access to key White House spaces after it was banned from the pool over a refusal to use “Gulf of America” in its widely-cited stylebook.
The AP sued the White House earlier this year over the decision to ban it from the pool.
As part of the White House’s new policy, wire services will be eligible for selection as part of the pool’s daily print-journalist rotation, but will no longer have a permanent slot in the group.
