DEF CON hackers uncover voting machine vulnerabilities, but fixes may be too late for 2024 election

The DEF CON “Voting Village” event saw participants testing various voting machines to bypass security measures designed to protect ballot counting and voter verification, Politico reported. Those concerned with the integrity of our elections are concerned with the lack of a system to promptly update security.
The organizers plan to release a report on the vulnerabilities found, which took up multiple pages by Saturday afternoon, but addressing these issues may not be feasible before the November election, according to Harri Hursti, co-founder of the Voting Village.
The event follows reports of a hacking incident targeting President Trump’s campaign, with Microsoft noting that Iranian hackers accessed a “high-ranking official’s” account. Additionally, during the 2016 election, the FBI reported breaches in election databases in two states, with Illinois and Arizona mentioned in reports.
In 2017, a lawsuit against Dominion voting systems in Georgia resulted in a court order for system updates due to identified vulnerabilities. Trust in U.S. elections has declined, particularly among Republicans, with concerns about electronic voting machines and allegations of voter fraud influencing public opinion, according to Rasmussen Reports.
