Germany Bans Farmers from Fertilising Own Land to Serve EU ‘Green Agenda’

Farmers in Germany have been banned from properly fertilizing large areas of their land under strict EU rules pushing the green agenda.

The use of nitrate fertilizers has been further restricted for large swathes of farmland in North Rhine-Westphalia, which is now likely to drastically reduce yields.

Although German authorities have implemented the ban, it is ultimately at the behest of the European Union, which is seeking to reduce the amount of nitrogen to tackle ‘climate change.’

The policy has already wreaked havoc in the Netherlands.

As The Daily Fetched reported in September:

Dutch farmers have risen in protest to oppose the government curbs on nitrogen emissions to comply with Brussels.

Only Denmark, Ireland, the Flanders region of Belgium, and the Netherlands are permitted to exceed 170 kilos of manure per hectare, the current EU cap.

But under the terms negotiated by the outgoing Agriculture Minister, the exemption will end in 2026 and impact approximately 18,000 farms in the Netherlands, which spreads more manure on fields than other EU nations.

Farms affected by the decision will only be able to apply for 10,000 euros in assistance, which even Staghouwer acknowledged will not be sufficient to cover their losses, adding it “is not a nice message” to the farmers.

Green agenda
Now the push has extended into Germany, forcing farmers to use 20 percent less fertilizer.

German news outlet Bild reported that a third of the total usable farmland in North Rhine-Westphalia falls under this new restriction.

“If a wheat field needs 200 kilos of fertilizer for optimal yield, farmers would now be forced to use 40 kilos less,” one local farmer, Erich Gussen, explained. “That means a drop in yield, and the quality of the wheat will suffer!”

Gussen added there is a “great indignation” amongst farmers who will see their bottom lines severely suffer.

Other federal states in the country could also soon be forced to reduce farmers’ fertilizer usage.

Farmers have been resisting the measures with countless protests.

In August, a group of Dutch farmers used their tractors to block the entrance to a paper factory in protest of the “double standards” of the global green agenda.

The farmers blocked the entrance to the Perenco paper mill in the Eastern Netherlands on Wednesday in protest of the apparent double hypocrisy of the government’s green agenda.

The paper mill wasn’t subject to the exact nitrogen emissions requirements currently being imposed on the farmers at the hands of PM Mark Rutte.

Farms in the Netherlands are forced to reduce their nitrogen output by 70 and 95 percent by 2030 to comply with the European Union’s Natura2000 agenda.
