China has told its citizens in Ukraine to evacuate the country immediately, fuelling fears a nuclear attack is imminent.

According to Chinese state media, the Chinese embassy in Ukraine is helping to organize the sudden exodus.

“With the current grim security situation in Ukraine, China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Chinese Embassy in Ukraine urge Chinese citizens in the country to enhance safety precautions and evacuate,” the Global Times tweeted.

Separate reports say the Foreign Ministry and Embassy also made the appeal in a press release.

“Those in Ukraine should contact the embassy as soon as possible and register their personal information,” one Chinese website said.

“People who voluntarily evacuate and transfer by themselves are asked to report to the diplomatic mission.”

Tensions escalate to ‘new level’
The Global Times report made no mention of a potential nuclear threat, but said tensions in Ukraine had “escalated to a new level”.

Three successive notices have been issued by the Chinese Embassy since Monday, reiterating the “grave safety situation” and reminding its citizens to take “emergency shelter and prepare emergency supplies”.

“For some time now, our fellow citizens have become less wary of responding to air raid sirens,” the embassy said.

“However, given the severe attacks at the moment, please make sure to enter shelter at the first sign of the sirens and carry emergency supplies in advance.

“Once again, please do not stay in the country unless it is urgent and necessary, and leave the country as soon as it is safe to do so.”

More countries begin emergency evacuations
Eight other countries have reportedly joined China in inviting their citizens to evacuate Ukraine in recent days.

Those countries include:

Serbia
Kazakhstan
Uzbekistan
Turkmenistan
Kyrgyzstan
Tajikistan
Belarus
Egypt
There are also unconfirmed reports that Kazakhstan has closed its embassy in the Ukrainian capital Kyiv.

Nuclear war ‘increasingly likely’
The world’s richest man, Elon Musk, is among many observers who believe the threat of a nuclear attack is growing.

“Nuclear war probability is rising rapidly,” Musk tweeted.

“Russia has the ability to destroy USA & Europe utterly with nuclear missiles in less than 30 minutes & vice versa,” he said.

“A surprising number of people don’t know this. Of course, it would be MAD to use them, but it is also MAD to be in this situation at all.”

It is unclear whether China’s urgent plea for citizens to leave Ukraine is linked to the threat of nuclear war, or simply a response to heightened tensions.
