A registered sex offender from Washington, D.C., has been federally indicted on charges involving the alleged trafficking of two minors.

Prosecutors say Lorenzo Turner allegedly recruited and transported one minor for commercial sex acts between May and July 2024 before allegedly trafficking a second minor through August.

The indictment followed an investigation by HSI Maryland and the Baltimore Police Department.

Washington D.C.: Homeland Security Investigations and Baltimore City PD have reported that they have indicted a Washington D.C. man with a known history of sex offenses for allegedly committing sex trafficking crimes against two defenseless children.

Lorenzo Turner, 43, who officials refer to as a “recidivist sex offender”, was charged with a slew of heinous charges involving small children. The charges include;

two counts of sex trafficking a child;

two counts of transporting a child with the intent to engage in criminal sexual activity;

and commission of a felony crime involving a child by a registered sex offender.

Legal documents obtained by the media state that between May and July of 2024, Turner was actively involved in child sex trafficking by recruiting and transporting a child victim to be used in illicit sex acts with individuals willing to pay, officially referred to as “commercial sex act”. The indictment then wrote that Turner continued these disturbing criminal sex acts beyond July 2024 with a second child.

Homeland Security Special Agent in Charge Evan Campanella stated in a press release, “This indictment underscores HSI Maryland’s unwavering commitment to protecting vulnerable children from exploitation.”

He added, “The allegations against Turner are deeply disturbing, and we will use every available resource to ensure that those who prey on minors and traffic children for commercial sex acts are brought to justice. We remain steadfast in our efforts to work with our state and local partners to safeguard our communities and support victims and their families.”

Turner is facing significant prison time.

If found guilty, he could receive at least 15 years and up to life imprisonment on each charge of trafficking a minor through force, fraud, or coercion. Each charge involving the transportation of a minor for illegal sexual activity carries a sentence between 10 years to life. In addition, because the alleged felony involved a child and was committed by a registered sex offender, Turner faces another mandatory 10-year prison term.

Child Sex Trafficking: A Broad Issue

Advocates against human and child sex trafficking applaud this latest indictment against a known sex offender, but more needs to be done.

“Child sex trafficking is a pervasive and underreported crime, and one of the most complex forms of child exploitation,” the Justice Department wrote.

Traffickers often prey on vulnerable children, exploiting poverty, unstable communities, and those with limited parental supervision. Those at increased risk include homeless and runaway youth and children in foster care or even within the juvenile justice system.

Worse yet, some children are victimized by their own family members.

"In fact, the Counter-Trafficking Data Collaborative, the world’s first data portal to include human trafficking case data contributed from multiple agencies, found that based on global data analyzed, family members are involved in 36% of child sex trafficking cases,” the Justice Department wrote.
