A catastrophic pair of earthquakes struck Venezuela on Wednesday evening, killing at least 920 people and leaving tens of thousands missing — the country’s deadliest seismic disaster in more than a century. The twin quakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude, hit within 39 seconds of each other near the town of Yumare on the Caribbean coast, toppling hundreds of buildings across the capital Caracas and the coastal state of La Guaira. The strikes were part of an unusually active week of global seismic activity, with significant earthquakes also recorded in Japan, Afghanistan, the Philippines, and Northern California.

VENEZUELA — The Week’s Deadliest Event

The most catastrophic seismic event of the week — and one of the most destructive in decades — struck north-central Venezuela on the evening of June 24, when two powerful earthquakes hit within 39 seconds of each other. The USGS located the Mw 7.2 foreshock near Yumare, Yaracuy at 22:04 UTC, followed almost immediately by a Mw 7.5 mainshock at 22:05 UTC in the same general area, roughly 28 km southeast of Yumare along Venezuela’s Caribbean coast.

The 7.5 mainshock is the strongest earthquake to strike Venezuela since the 1900 San Narciso earthquake. Both events have been classified as shallow strike-slip faulting along the San Sebastián fault system — a complex boundary zone where the Caribbean Plate meets the South American Plate. Because the events were shallow (around 10 km depth for the mainshock), seismic energy was released directly beneath densely populated areas, amplifying destruction. Caracas, situated in a deep sedimentary basin, was especially vulnerable to amplified ground motion.

Human Impact: Casualty figures remain in flux, reflecting ongoing rescue operations and restricted communications within the country. As of the latest reports, at least 920 people have been confirmed killed, more than 4,500 injured, and upwards of 50,000 remain missing. Venezuela’s Health Ministry cited approximately 235 dead and around 4,300 injured in an earlier official count. The USGS PAGER system issued a red alert — its highest level — for both the 7.2 and 7.5 events, and modelling suggested deaths could reach into the tens of thousands as search-and-rescue teams access harder-hit areas.

La Guaira, a coastal state north of Caracas, suffered the worst damage and was declared a disaster zone, with more than 100 buildings reported collapsed there alone. Simón Bolívar International Airport sustained structural damage and was closed. A state of emergency was declared by Acting President Delcy Rodríguez. More than 138 aftershocks followed the initial doublet. A tsunami advisory was briefly issued for Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands before being cancelled.

International search-and-rescue teams from the United States (Fairfax County, VA and Los Angeles County, CA), Mexico, El Salvador, and the Dominican Republic have deployed to the affected region. UNICEF warned that roughly 3.9 million children live in affected areas.

JAPAN — Sanriku Coast Earthquake
Magnitude: 6.9 | June 24, 2026 Epicenter: 30 km ENE of Kuji, Iwate Prefecture | Depth: ~51 km

Just minutes after the Venezuela earthquakes, a magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck off the northeastern coast of Japan’s Sanriku coast at 22:30 UTC on June 24. The USGS placed the epicenter at coordinates 40.29°N, 142.10°E, approximately 30 km east-northeast of Kuji in Iwate Prefecture, at a depth of about 51 km.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) issued a tsunami forecast for the region — waves of less than one foot were possible — though no significant tsunami materialized. An 80-centimeter wave was recorded at Kuji; smaller waves were observed at Miyako and other coastal stations. No tsunami threat was issued for Hawaii, Alaska, or the U.S. mainland.

The JMA intensity scale recorded a maximum of 5-upper (5+) in Hashikami, Aomori, and strong shaking was felt across Iwate, Aomori, Hokkaido, and as far south as central-eastern Japan. According to USGS estimates, approximately 4.8 million people may have felt the quake, with around 340,000 exposed to strong shaking. Ten people were injured, two seriously, across Hokkaido, Aomori, and Iwate prefectures. At least 232 buildings were damaged in Aomori Prefecture, a road was damaged in Ishinomaki, and roughly 200 households lost power in Hiraizumi, Iwate. Evacuation orders were issued to more than 175,000 people across 13 cities, 21 towns, and 6 villages in multiple prefectures.

The USGS PAGER system issued a yellow alert, indicating local impact was possible but widespread casualties were not expected. A subsequent M4.8 aftershock struck the region on June 25.

AFGHANISTAN & PAKISTAN — Hindu Kush Tremors
Magnitude: 6.1 (USGS) / 6.0–6.2 (EMSC/NCS) | June 27, 2026 Epicenter: ~43 km south of Jurm, Badakhshan | Depth: ~208 km

A strong earthquake rattled Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush region on Saturday, June 27, at approximately 13:34 UTC (7:04 PM local time). The USGS measured it at magnitude 6.1, with the epicenter located 43 km south of Jurm in Badakhshan Province at a depth of roughly 208 km — a deep-focus event. The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) recorded it at magnitude 6.0, while India’s National Centre for Seismology reported a value of 6.2. The variation is typical of agencies applying different measurement methodologies.

Because of its great depth, the earthquake was widely felt but produced limited surface damage. Tremors were reported in Kabul, across Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province (including significant alarm in Swat district), Islamabad, Punjab, Pakistan-administered Kashmir, and as far as Delhi-NCR in India. Pakistan’s meteorological department placed district emergency services on alert. No casualties or significant structural damage had been officially reported as of the time of writing, though the Afghanistan National Disaster Management Authority said checks were ongoing.

A separate magnitude 5.4 earthquake also struck Pakistan’s Balochistan region on the same day, according to EMSC.

CALIFORNIA, USA — Northern California Shaker
Magnitude: 5.6 | June 24, 2026 Epicenter: Near Willits, Mendocino County | Depth: Shallow

Northern California was rattled on the morning of June 24 by a magnitude 5.6 earthquake near Willits in Mendocino County, according to the USGS. Residents across a wide area received early-warning alerts through the MyShake app at approximately 8:10 AM local time. The ShakeAlert early-warning system activated, as the quake surpassed the Mw 4.5 threshold for public alerts.

Shaking was felt as far as San Jose and Sacramento. California’s Governor Gavin Newsom was briefed, and the California Office of Emergency Services actively monitored the situation. Officials reported no significant structural damage, though some minor injuries were reported in the affected area. The City of Ukiah reported no apparent major damage. The USGS forecast up to 33 magnitude 3.0 or higher aftershocks in the following week, with a 6% chance of a subsequent quake exceeding magnitude 5.

PHILIPPINES — Sarangani Quake

A magnitude 6.5 earthquake struck approximately 34 km west-southwest of Sarangani on the southern Philippine island of Mindanao on June 26 at 11:34 UTC. The USGS placed the epicenter at 5.239°N, 125.197°E at a depth of 42 km, classifying it as a shallow crustal event. Peak shaking reached MMI 7.0 (severe). The USGS issued a green PAGER alert, indicating no significant casualties or major damage were expected. Forty-two people submitted felt reports to the USGS Did You Feel It? system.
