Jared Isaacman, billionaire founder and CEO of Shift4, was confirmed by the Senate on Wednesday as NASA’s new administrator, concluding a tumultuous nomination process initiated by President Donald Trump in December 2024, withdrawn five months later, and revived in November.

Isaacman, 42, lacks prior NASA or federal experience but has funded two private SpaceX spaceflights.

During his December 3 confirmation hearing before the Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee, chaired by Ted Cruz, Isaacman prioritized returning NASA astronauts to the moon ahead of China.

He addressed leaked Project Athena documents outlining his vision, calling them a “draft” but “directionally correct,” focusing on Mars missions, nuclear propulsion, center overhauls, and commercial science emphasis.

Isaacman downplayed ties to Elon Musk, noting no personal photos exist and his SpaceX flights stemmed from it being the only U.S. option for human spaceflight post-shuttle retirement.

His leadership arrives amid NASA’s budget uncertainties, with Trump’s proposals slashing $6 billion (24%), though congressional opposition persists.

NASA’s Artemis program aims for a lunar flyby next year and south pole landing in mid-2027, contrasting China’s 2030 target.
