The Department of Justice (DOJ) has eliminated over 4,000 positions, including plans to cut 1,500 FBI personnel, as outlined in its fiscal 2026 budget request, according to documents reviewed by the Washington Examiner.

The budget, released Monday, notes that 4,500 of these positions were already vacant due to the Trump administration’s “Fork in the Road” program, which allowed voluntary employee exits with benefits, saving an estimated $470 million, per the budget summary.

The FBI’s restructuring includes eliminating over 700 vacant special agent positions and relocating staff from Washington, D.C., to field offices, as announced by FBI Director Kash Patel and Deputy Director Dan Bongino last month.
