South Carolina State Representative Arrested on Federal Child Exploitation Charges

South Carolina State Representative RJ May (R-Lexington) was arrested at his home and charged with 10 federal counts of distributing child sexual abuse material, according to court documents filed this week.
Federal prosecutors allege May used the online handle "joebidennnn69" to exchange 220 files containing illegal content through the Kik messaging platform over a five-day period in spring 2024. The material allegedly involved toddlers and young children in sexual acts.
The prosecution also revealed a separate investigation into May's international travel, including three trips to Colombia. Homeland Security agents testified they found videos on May's laptop allegedly showing him with three females who appeared underage. Investigators have been unable to locate these individuals.
May, serving his third term in the South Carolina House, was a founding member of the chamber's Freedom Caucus in 2020.
