Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealth, was killed in a shooting Wednesday morning outside the Midtown Hilton Hotel. Thompson, 50, was shot in the chest and pronounced dead at the hospital.

Police sources told the New York Post that a masked man shot Thompson outside the hotel at around 6:46 am and fled eastbound down 6th Avenue. Police say that the shooting was a targeted attack. Images from surveillance cameras showed the suspect holding up a handgun and riding a bicycle to flee the scene.



The suspect, who has not been arrested, is described as a white male wearing a black face mask, cream-colored jacket, and black and white sneakers carrying a gray backpack. Police sources told the outlet that when the suspect saw Thompson, he began firing at him from a distance, hitting him multiple times.

CEO of parent company UnitedHealth Group Andrew Witty said that Thompson was attending the firm’s Investor Day conference at the Hotel Wednesday, which was called off due to a "very serious medical situation" with one of its team members.

Witty said, "I’m afraid that we – some of you may know we’re dealing with very serious medical situation with one of our team members. And as a result, I’m afraid we’re going to have to bring to a close the event today, which I’m sure you’ll understand," per CNBC.

The CEO of UnitedHealth was fatally shot in the chest Wednesday morning outside the Hilton hotel in Midtown in what police say was a targeted attack.

Brian Thompson, 50, was at the hotel around 6:46 a.m., arriving early for a conference, when a masked man allegedly waiting for him fired at the CEO repeatedly and fled eastbound off 6th Avenue, police sources told The Post.

Thompson, in critical condition, was rushed to Mt. Sinai Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, police said.

Officials said no arrests have been made yet and that the investigation is still ongoing.

The suspect was described as a white male wearing a cream-colored jacket, black face mask, and black and white sneakers. Officials said he was also carrying a grey backpack.

Witnesses told The Post the suspect had been spotted near the vicinity of the hotel, on 6th Avenue, milling around.

The Plot Thickens: UnitedHealthcare was being investigated by the Department of Justice for antitrust violations and its CEO was accused of fraud before he was assassinated outside a Manhattan hotel on Wednesday.

Thompson, 50, was shot dead in what NYPD officials believe was a targeted attack as he exited the Hilton hotel before an investor conference. His killer remains on the loose.

Earlier this year the DoJ launched a probe into whether the nation's biggest insurer, led by Thompson, was unfairly restricting competitors and running a monopoly.

The DoJ also sued to block the company's acquisition of home health and hospice provider Amedisys, naming Thompson and others and accusing them of unlawful practices.

Thompson was accused of being aware of the DoJ probe into the company and not telling investors before he unloaded over 31 percent of his stock.

Last month, Simply Wall Street reported that amid the probe and lawsuit, UnitedHealth insiders had sold $16million of their stock - Thompson was the biggest insider seller, unloading $12million worth of shares, at about US$521 per share.

The gunman wanted in the broad daylight slaying of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson is seen smiling in new surveillance images released by the New York City Police Department on Thursday.

The unknown assassin's face is shown for the first time in the two new images the NYPD released as the manhunt continues for a second day.

"With these new photos, if indeed they are the shooter, it is now only a matter of time," Fox News crime analysis contributor Paul Mauro told Fox News Digital. "Facial recognition and other technologies have come a long way, and my understanding is that the police have been making progress on other fronts in this case. It is truer than ever that you can’t get away with murder these days. The detectives will get whoever is behind this, and soon."

New evidence also suggests that the suspect who killed Thompson on Wednesday may have left a message behind on the bullet casings at the scene.

The author of a book tied to the assassination of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson refused to address the killer's apparent tribute to his tome when contacted by DailyMail.com.

Author Jay M. Feinman responded 'no comment' when asked for his take on bullet casings left at the scene of Thompson's shooting outside Manhattan's Hilton Hotel on Wednesday, which were scrawled with 'depose', 'deny' and 'defend.'

The message is eerily similar to Feinman's 2010 book 'Delay, Deny, Defend', which details 'why insurance companies don't pay claims and what you can do about it.'

Critics allege the tactic is used by insurance companies to 'ensure your claim is either never paid or paid at a rate far below what you deserve'.

Health insurance boss Thompson, 50, was shot in the back and calf early on Wednesday by a masked man who fled on a bike, before the CEO succumbed to his injuries in hospital.

Feinman is a law professor at Rutgers University. It's unclear whether he had any personal impetus to write the book.

It explains how the health insurance industry routinely puts claimants off with bureaucratic tactics and, in the end, never end up paying out.

Police are yet to confirm the gunman's identity or motive.

Investigators are days away from DNA results in evidence connected to the shooter who gunned down UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, The Post has learned.

The potential DNA evidence has been recovered from a water bottle believed to have been dropped by the masked gunman as he fled from shooting Thompson outside the Hilton hotel in Midtown, as well as bullets from the scene, sources said.

A Starbucks coffee cup from the shooter is also being processed for DNA evidence, according to sources.

The manhunt for the shooter — which entered its third day Friday — has involved investigators tracking his movements across New York City going back to his apparent arrival on Nov. 24 on a bus from Atlanta pulling into Port Authority.

A leaked internal video from the CEO of UnitedHealth Group shows him telling employees of the company there is no upside to talking with the media.

CEO Andrew Witty made the internal address days after the shocking Midtown assassination of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, 50.

The footage of Witty’s remarks was shared by journalist Ken Klippenstein on his website.
“You’ve seen a lot of media interest in this situation with a huge amount of misinformation and frankly offensive communication,” Witty told employees, maligning what he called the “aggressive, inappropriate and disrespectful” coverage of Thompson’s murder.

“People are writing things we simply don’t recognize,” he added.

“I’d like to give you a little bit of advice around the media,” Witty continued. “My strong advice and request to everybody is just don’t engage with the media. If you’re approached, I would recommend not responding and, if necessary, simply refer them to our own media organization.”
