R. Kelly’s racketeering and sex trafficking convictions, along with a 30-year prison sentence, were upheld Wednesday by a federal appeals court that concluded the singer exploited his fame for over a quarter century to sexually abuse girls and young women.
The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan ruled Wednesday after hearing arguments last March.
The Grammy-winning, multiplatinum-selling R&B songwriter was convicted in 2021 in Brooklyn federal court of multiple charges, including racketeering and sex trafficking.
Attorney Jennifer Bonjean, representing R. Kelly, said in a statement that she believed the Supreme Court will agree to hear an appeal. She called the 2nd Circuit ruling “unprecedented," saying it gives prosecutors limitless discretion to apply the racketeering law “to situations absurdly remote” from the statute's intent.

Disgraced rapper R Kelly was rushed to hospital after overdosing on medication in prison.
The R&B star suffered the overdose after being given medications by prison staff, his attorney said in a filing. Federal prosecutors denied this.
He is serving a 30-year prison sentence for racketeering and sex trafficking, after being exposed as a serial sex abuser in the #MeToo movement.
According to an attorney for the rapper, real name Robert Sylvester Kelly, he was put into solitary confinement on June 10 and was locked up with anxiety medication.
On the same day, he was given more medications and was directed to take them, the filing said.
Three days later, Kelly reported feeling 'faint' and 'dizzy', and 'started to see black spots in his vision', before he passed out and was rushed to nearby Duke University Hospital.
According to the filing, the rapper was heard telling a prison staffer that 'this is going to open a new can of worms.'
Kelly spent two days recovering in hospital, and his attorneys allege that the prison staffers 'gave him an amount of medicine that could have killed him.'
