THIERRY BRETON: "WE DID IT IN ROMANIA. IF NECESSARY, WE'LL DO IT IN GERMANY."

Former European Commissioner Thierry Breton has reignited the debate over election interference after declaring that the measures taken following Romania's presidential election could be repeated elsewhere in Europe.

Speaking about the EU's Digital Services Act and online regulation, Breton said:

"We did it in Romania, and if necessary, we will have to do it in Germany as well."

His comments refer to Romania's controversial presidential election, where the Constitutional Court annulled the result following intelligence reports alleging foreign interference and concerns over online campaigning.

Breton argued the EU must enforce its laws to prevent what it considers interference in democratic processes and suggested platforms that fail to comply could ultimately face sanctions, including possible bans.

🎯 MY ASSESSMENT: Regardless of where people stand politically, this is a remarkable statement. The idea that actions taken after Romania's election could serve as a model for future interventions in other European democracies is likely to intensify concerns over the balance between protecting elections and preserving democratic choice.

I travelled to Romania to investigate these events firsthand. My documentary examines the controversy surrounding the annulled election, the allegations of interference, and the wider implications for democracy across Europe.
