The Trump administration has started flying immigrants who entered the U.S. illegally to Guantanamo Bay. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt stated, “President Trump is not messing around... a dumping ground for illegal criminals.”
A memo was signed to prepare a facility for 30,000 migrants at Guantanamo Bay, known for housing military prisoners. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem confirmed, “Due process will be followed.”
While the Biden administration aimed to wind down operations, there are still 15 detainees at Guantanamo. The Trump administration is also forming agreements with Colombia, Venezuela, and El Salvador to deport immigrants.

Federal court blocks Trump admin from sending detained Venezuelan immigrants to Guantánamo Bay
A federal court on Sunday issued a temporary restraining order blocking the Trump administration from sending three Venezuelan immigrants held in New Mexico to the Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, detention camp as part of the president's efforts to remove illegal immigrants from the U.S.
Lawyers for the trio said in a legal filing that the detainees "fit the profile of those the administration has prioritized for detention in Guantánamo, i.e. Venezuelan men detained in the El Paso area with (false) charges of connections with the Tren de Aragua gang."

The Trump administration sent three illegal immigrants back to their home country of Venezuela in response to a judge's decision blocking them from being sent to Guantánamo Bay as part of a continued crackdown on illegal immigration.
U.S. District Judge Kenneth J. Gonzales of New Mexico issued a memo Friday announcing the court had vacated a March 3 status conference for three Venezuelan migrants just five days after it blocked the Trump administration's efforts to transfer the migrants to Guantánamo Bay.
Since then, Gonzales said, respondents had filed a notice of removal "informing the court that all three petitioners were removed to Venezuela, their home country, on Feb. 10, 2025."

The Trump administration’s plans to detain migrants in Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, hit another roadblock this week after all 40 such individuals held there were sent back to the United States, with no future deportation flights scheduled to the island.
A Defense official confirmed to The Hill Thursday there are “zero” migrants being held at Naval Station Guantanamo Bay, including a group of 23 “high threat” individuals held at the detention facility on base and 17 others who were detained at the migrant operations center there.
The official did not say where the men had been moved to, but multiple outlets reported they were transported by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) aircraft Tuesday and relocated to one or more of the agency’s facilities in Louisiana.
Further questions were referred to ICE, which did not respond to requests for comment from The Hill. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) did not comment.
