DHS Secretary Kristi Noem has revoked temporary protected status, known as TPS, for over 300,000 Venezuelans in the US. This means that those Venezuelans who were given protection by the US government from returning to their home countries in turmoil could face deportation if they don't choose to return on their own. This includes any members of violent gang Tren de Aragua who may be in the US on this program.

Venzuelans who are in the US on this program will lose their status within 60 days of the termination notice. As Trump has been issuing deportations of Venzuelans who are illegally in the US, he has been in contact with the President Nicolás Maduro about accepting those immigrants home, per The New York Times. Over one million people are in the US with this status.

While 300,000 Venezuelans will lose their status, another 250,000 have the status in place until September. Venezuela had originally said they would not take home returning migrants, but Trump indicated that the government had reversed course over the weekend.

"It is so good to have the Venezuela Hostages back home and, very important to note, that Venezuela has agreed to receive, back into their Country, all Venezuela illegal aliens who were encamped in the U.S., including gang members of Tren de Aragua," President Donald Trump said on Truth Social. "Venezuela has further agreed to supply the transportation back. We are in the process of removing record numbers of illegal aliens from all Countries, and all Countries have agreed to accept these illegal aliens back. Furthermore, record numbers of criminals are being removed from our Country, and the Border numbers are the strongest they have been since the First Term of the Trump Administration!"

Under the Biden administration, TPS, which was only intended for 18 months or so, continued to be extended year after year. "We're going to stop doing temporary protected status," VP JD Vance said ahead of the election. Prior to leaving office, Biden's DHS Sec. Alejandro Mayorkas extended protections for those on TPS.

"Venezuela is experiencing ‘a complex, serious and multidimensional humanitarian crisis,'" Mayorkas said when making the extension. "The crisis has reportedly disrupted every aspect of life in Venezuela."

The Biden administration extended temporary protected status to persons from Venezuela, Cuba, Haiti, and other places. This is what led to the high profile circumstances in Springfield, Ohio wherein over 20,000 Haitians took up residence in the area, supported by the US federal government. During his first term, Trump undid these protections for those from Sudan, El Salvador, Haiti, and other nations.
