Top Blackrock executive Mark Wiedman is leaving the world’s largest asset manager, according to a person familiar with the matter.

Wiedman was most recently head of BlackRock’s global client business and viewed as one of the top candidates to succeed longtime Chief Executive Larry Fink when he retires.

Wiedman’s decision to leave was his own, and he will remain at BlackRock through the spring, the person said.

Over more than two decades at BlackRock, Wiedman was known for leading the integration of Barclays Global Investors and the iShares exchange-traded fund business after BlackRock acquired them in 2009. Wiedman oversaw massive growth in the iShares business, which catapulted BlackRock to the biggest asset manager in the world.
