Detroit Police Chief James Craig is retiring from the force and weighing a run against controversial Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.
Craig’s retirement is effective June 1, after 44 years in law enforcement.

“We saw what happened to many chiefs across this country. Some were forced out, some retired because they didn’t feel supported and some were fired. I’m leaving in a good place. I love this city and I love this state,” Craig said during a press conference on Monday.

While Craig has not yet announced if he is running, sources told Fox 2 that an announcement should come in the next week or two — and he is expected to run as a Republican.“I’m a lifelong public servant. I want to continue to serve,” he said on Friday.

However, Craig says he isn’t quite sure yet about the gubernatorial run.

“I have not made that decision. I am not ruling it out. There’s an appropriate time and I will get past this and then I will come out with a decision,” Craig said. “I am deeply passionate for public service.”

GOP sources have confirmed to Click on Detroit that Craig has already met with several Republican donors.
